HOW TO APPLY FOR A LOW-COST PERSONAL COMPUTER
Tech Access will provide personal computers to any resident
family or individual of Pennsylvania who can demonstrate both a need
and the desire for the technology. These PCs consist of:
HARDWARE: Each machine will consist of,
at a minimum, a desktop PC with a Pentium II processor, either a modem
(if to be used with dial-up internet access) or a LAN card or WIFI card,
if to be used for connection to Wireless Philadelphia broadband. Each
PC will come with the necessary perifierals and input devices, such
as monitor, keyboard, mouse.
SOFTWARE: Each machine will come loaded
with an operating system (Windows 98SE or above), and basic office software
(Open Office).
COST: The recipient of a Tech Access
PC will agree to pay $80 for the machine to help partially
offset the cost of upgrades and repairs. In addition, each recipient
of a Tech Access PC will agree to spend ONE HOUR of individual or classroom
instruction on the use of the machine and in the productive use of the
Internet. (Applications for Waivers of the $80 donation are available
to those for whom $80 would present an unsurmountable obsticle to obtaining
a PC.)
